Vaccine production

Grow cells and viruses for vaccine development without fetal bovine serum.

The Challenge

Fetal bovine serum varies with the donor animal and region. It can carry viral and prion contaminants, and it introduces mammalian proteins into avian virus systems. Its supply and price are unpredictable too.

How YEX helps

Dechra Veterinary Products’ vaccine development team tested YEX against FBS in their own virus growth workflows. Vero and LMH cells grew normally in YEX. Three avian viruses reached titres comparable to FBS, and infectious bursal disease virus grew to a higher titre in 2% YEX on Vero cells. YEX removes bovine-derived material from the workflow entirely.

Key Results

Data: Dechra Veterinary Products, 2024.

≈2×

Higher IBDV titre with 2% YEX than with 2% FBS on Vero cells

3 viruses

Avian reovirus, egg drop syndrome virus and IBDV all grown in YEX media

2 cell lines

Vero and LMH cells grew to comparable densities with normal appearance

The Data

Virus titres in YEX media compared with FBS for three avian viruses.

Virus titres in YEX media were comparable to FBS across three avian viruses, with a gain for IBDV on Vero cells.

Vero and LMH cell densities in YEX compared with FBS.

Vero and LMH cells grew to comparable densities in YEX and FBS.

How to use YEX

For virus growth, use 2% YEX in DMEM, which performed best in Dechra’s tests. For routine cell growth, use 10% YEX.

Recommended product: Adherent formulation, YEX-003 (500 mL) / YEX-006 (50 mL)
